Philippine government orders Muslim teachers to remove veils

July 23, 2013

The Philippines’ education secretary has directed the nation’s Muslim teachers to remove their veils in the classroom.

Removing the veil permits “proper identification of the teachers by their pupils, thus promoting better teacher-pupil relationship,” according to the directive.

Agence France-Presse reported that Muslim students will still be permitted to wear their veils in the classroom.

The nation of 104 million is 81% Catholic and 5% Muslim.
