Ecuador: evangelical protest outside Catholic parish over veneration of images
April 10, 2013
Eduardo Mora, an evangelical pastor, has led a sit-in protest against the veneration of images at the Church of San Francisco Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city. After the protest began, Catholics and evangelicals clashed outside the church, which dates from 1603.
Denouncing Mora’s protest as “provocative,” Archbishop Antonio Arregui said, “These are calculated and deliberate actions, they want public attention on this position, and even want to institutionalize the insult as a way of life; therefore this is not acceptable.”
The Ecuadorian Federation of Evangelical Ministers also criticized Mora’s protest as “fanatical and bellicose.”
The nation of 15.2 million is 91% Catholic.
