Confirmed: Archbishop Tobin to leave Vatican, head Indianapolis archdiocese
October 18, 2012
Archbishop Joseph Tobin, the secretary of the Congregation for Religious, has been named the Archbishop of Indianapolis, confirming reports that had circulated earlier this week.
The appointment is noteworthy because it comes just 2 years after Archbishop Tobin was named secretary of the Congregation for Religious. The American archbishop had drawn both praise and criticism in that post by expressing sympathy for the American women religious who were the subject of a Vatican probe.
