Russian prelate discusses 'new evangelization' in Synod address, papal audience

October 17, 2012

The leading ecumenical official of the Moscow Patriarchate spoke about the “new evangelization” in Russia during an October 16 meeting with Pope Benedict XVI.

Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk met with the Pontiff after he addressed the Synod of Bishops on the same topic: the new evangelization. The Russian Orthodox prelate told Vatican Radio that the Pope had shown a keen interest in the news from Russia.

Metropolitan Hilarion disclosed that he had also spoken with Pope Benedict about ecumenical exchanges between the Catholic and Orthodox churches, and shared concerns about the persecution of Christians, especially in the Middle East.
