Spanish premier faces criticism from leftist supporters for welcoming Pope to WYD
CWN - August 22, 2011
Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero, who has crossed swords with Church leaders frequently because of his support for a liberal social agenda, now faces complaints from his Socialist supporters because of the government's efforts to ensure the success of World Youth Day and the visit by Pope Benedict XVI.
Protesters objected to heavy coverage of WYD activities on government-controlled television networks, and the security effort that kept demonstrators clear of the papal events.
