WYD costs Spanish taxpayers nothing, Vatican notes
CWN - August 18, 2011
Responding to protests in Spain over the costs of the World Youth Day celebration, the Vatican has released a statement pointing out that the costs will be absorbed completely by participants and corporate sponsors.
"The event will not cost anything" for Spanish taxpayers, the Vatican observed.
Although the Spanish government will see some indirect expenses, such as the cost of security and traffic control, those expenses will probably be outweighed by the revenue generated by 1 million pilgrims who are spending, on average, more than a week in Madrid, visiting restaurants and museums and buying souvenirs.
