Catholic Recipe: Shortbread

    INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup sweet butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon anise brandy
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • whole cloves
  • confectioners' sugar
  • orange juice

DIRECTIONS

Cream butter with sugar. Add brandy, vanilla, egg yolks. Sift flour with baking powder. Gradually add to creamed mixture; roll out. Cut into biscuit shapes. Place on floured baking sheet. Insert clove into each shortbread. Bake 20 minutes at 350° until cooked through, but not browned. Remove from oven. Sprinkle sugar, orange juice on buns while still hot. Cool. Place 1 clove in center of each biscuit. Yield, 3 dozen (approximately)
