In ecclesiastical law an association of the laity organized for the purpose of practicing some work of piety or charity. Primary unions have the right of aggregating other similar organizations. The effects are akin to the aggregation of a confraternity to an archconfraternity. the title Primary Union is sometimes conferred by the Holy See as a mark of special recognition.
