CROWN OF THORNS
A wreath of thorns mockingly placed on the head of Christ by Pilate's soldiers. St. Louis, King of France (1214-70), redeemed it from the Venetians and had constructed in its honor the magnificent Sainte-Chapell in Paris. As a symbol of suffering in art, it is associated with martyrdom.
