India: 18 bishops fast to protest Karnataka commission report
February 22, 2011
Tens of thousands of Christians in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka took to the streets on February 20 to protest a recent report that absolved the local government, police, and Hindu groups of responsibility for violent attacks on Christians in the region. Eighteen bishops took part in a fast at St. Mark’s University in Bangalore in the days leading up to the protest.
Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore expressed grave concern about some of the recommendations in the commission report, such as “the introduction of anti-conversion legislation and government regulation of Christian activities, including properties and foreign donations.”
