Christians plan mass protest in Karnataka

February 04, 2011

Thousands of Christians in the western Indian state of Karnataka will take part in a peaceful protest in defense of their religion. Despite 251 incidents of violence against Christians in Karnataka since 2008, a government inquiry recently absolved the local government, police, and Hindu groups of responsibility for violent attacks on Christians in the region.

“We ask that the report be withdrawn and replaced with a new impartial investigation,” said Joseph Dias, a lay Catholic activist. “Otherwise we risk that the Hindu extremist movements, which seek to eliminate the Christian presence from Indian society, will end up having the upper hand, with institutional support.”
