Turkish court rules bishop's killer insane, blocking further investigation

December 02, 2010

A Turkish court has ruled that the man who murdered Bishop Luigi Padovese is insane, rejecting the evidence that the killer was guided by Islamic nationalist ideology.

Murat Altun was found to be “mentally ill,” despite the fact that several psychiatrists had deemed him fully sane just prior to the killing. The finding cuts of any further investigation of the motives for the killing.

Church leaders in Turkey lament that they have not been given standing to comment on the legal case. The Church has called in vain for a thorough investigation of the murder. Eyewitnessed have pointed out that after stabbing the bishop, Altun shouted: “Allahu akbar!” Some questions remain as to how Altun won his position as the bishop’s chauffeur, apparently having been recommended by government officials.
