Irish archbishop says cover-up aggravated sex-abuse scandal
September 16, 2010
With Pope Benedict’s trip to Great Britain renewing media interest in the sex-abuse scandal, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin said that bishops aggravated the problem by suppressing the evidence.
"Abuse was reinforced by covering it up," said Archbishop Martin, who has been consistently critical of his fellow bishops for failing to disclose evidence of sexual abuse by clerics. "There is no way forward for the church in carrying out its mission without adequately addressing its past," he said.
