Florida bishop sees growing gap between Democrats and Catholics

October 13, 2008

Bishop Thomas Wenski has discussed the upcoming election in a telephone interview with a Florida newspaper. ‘If someone said, 'I'm going to vote for Obama because he was right on the war,' we might wince a bit, but it wouldn't be a sin. But if they said, 'I'm going to vote for Obama because he supports abortion rights,' that would be sinful,’ said Bishop Wenski. Observing the increasing distancing between the Church and the Democratic Party, Wenski said that ‘if the Democrats make the election a referendum on abortion rights, it will be even harder for [supporters of Sen. Barack Obama like] Doug Kmiec to vote for Obama.’
