Muslims could become Europe's majority, Italian priest warns

September 07, 2010

Muslims could soon constitute a majority in Europe, largely because of the low birth rates among Christians, an Italian priest has warned. Father Piero Gheddo insisted: “The challenge must be taken seriously.”

While the Daily Telegraph report on Father Gheddo’s remarks emphasizes competition between Christianity and Islam for influence in Europe, it is important to note that the priest was speaking primarily about the willingness of European Christians to accept children.

The Telegraph also wrongly identifies Father Gheddo in its headline as a “senior Vatican official.” He is a noted author and journalist working with the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions.
