A priest who had defied a 1996 order by his bishop to leave his parish was forcibly removed by an angry mob on August 24.
According to a spokesman for the Diocese of Denpasar, Father Yohanes Tanumihardja was offered the opportunity “to continue his work as a priest in another diocese in another province, but he refused the idea.” Bishop Silvester Tung Kiem San said he had earlier appealed to police to evict the priest from the parish, but the police had refused, calling the matter an internal Church affair.
