August 17, 2010
A former priest who is facing extradition to Ireland on nine counts of indecent assault and has been accused by two California men of abusing them during the early 1980s. Patrick McCabe, who recently told police that “I got satisfaction from an embrace and being close to a boy,” reportedly held children on his lap during their first confessions.
McCabe ministered in the Archdiocese of Dublin from 1973 to 1981; following abuse allegations, he went to a treatment center for abusive clergy in New Mexico. Bishop Mark Hurley of Santa Rosa then allowed McCabe to minister in his California diocese until 1985. McCabe left the priesthood in 1988.
