Philippine prelate emphasizes: Automatic excommunication for abortion

CWN - August 09, 2010

A leading Philippine prelate is reminding Catholics that those who procure an abortion incur an automatic excommunication. The excommunication, says Archbishop Oscar Cruz, affects “the woman concerned, the husband who helped her, the abortionist, [and] the nurses” who actively participated in the abortion.

In its report on Archbishop Cruz’s comments, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines’ online radio inaccurately reported that “in the Catholic Church today, there are only two sins whereby the penalty of excommunication is involved.” A full list of excommunicable offenses can be found in the Code of Canon Law (1364 ff.).
