Belgian bishop paid ‘substantial’ sums to abused nephew's family

The Belgian bishop who resigned in April after admitting he sexually abused his nephew paid “substantial” sums to the victim’s family over the years, according to Peter Rossel, spokesman for the Belgian bishops’ conference. Rossel said that “until last year, Bishop Roger Vangheluwe handed over considerable sums to the family of his victim in the form of damages.”
