Pope welcomes treaty against cluster bombs

At his Sunday audience on August 1, Pope Benedict XVI expressed his support for a new international pact banning cluster bombs, which went into effect that day. The Pontiff observed that the bombs have claimed many innocent victims—including many who survive with crippling injuries today—and their use in warfare makes it more difficult to clear battlefields for normal use.
