CWN Editor's Note: Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna told reporters at the Synod that Pope Francis could change the wording of the Catechism’s teaching on homosexuality.

The Austrian cardinal—who is the editor of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, said that “the Pope is the only one who can decide, because he’s the one who promulgated the Catechism.”

Cardinal Schönborn was referring specifically to the Catechism’s teaching that homosexualty is “intrinsically disordered.” He pointed out that the Catechism has already been changed in important ways, most notably by the insistence of Pope Francis that the death penalty is “unacceptable.”
