Filipino prelate scolds participants in unruly procession
Catholic World News - January 11, 2010
Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales of Manila expressed dismay at the excessively emotional displays that occurred during an annual procession honoring the revered Black Nazarene icon. A stampede during the procession resulted in two deaths and 400 injuries. The archbishop said that true reverence would have led to a serene and reflective atmosphere rather than such an outburst. The procession drew a crowd estimated at 4 million.
