About 1.7 million attended papal audiences in 2009
CWN - January 05, 2010
About 1.7 million people attended public audiences by Pope Benedict XVI during 2009, according to figures furnished by the pontifical household. There were 1.12 million people in attendance at the Pope’s midday audiences on Sundays, and over 500,000 at his regular weekly audiences on Wednesdays.
If liturgical celebrations are included, a total of 2.24 million people saw the Pope in various public events at the Vatican during the year. The figures furnished by the prefecture of the pontifical household do not include attendance at papal events outside the Vatican, including his trips abroad-- although they do include the audiences held at the summer papal residence in Castel Gandolfo.
