Pope meets Albanian Orthodox prelate, remarks on nation's spiritual revival

During a December 4 meeting with the Orthodox Archbishop Anastas of Tirana, Albania, Pope Benedict XVI commented on the long history of Christian witness in that country, which has survived “an extremely repressive and hostile atheistic regime” in the last generation. The Pope paid tribute to the “spiritual renewal” of Albania, and emphasized the desire of the Catholic Church to work with the Albanian Orthodox to strengthen “a renewed commitment to the unity of our churches.”
