Heirs of deceased Boston prelate fight against reinternment plans

December 01, 2009

The Boston archdiocese and neighboring Boston College are locked in a legal battle with heirs of Cardinal William O'Connell over a proposal to move the tomb of the former Archbishop of Boston. Cardinal O'Connell, who died in 1944, is buried in a chapel on land that was owned by the archdiocese, but sold in 2004 to Boston College. The archdiocese will lose $2 million of the sale price if it is not able to remove the chapel and the cardinal's grave.
