Arlington bishop decides to continue CCHD collection November 16, 2009

Bishop Paul Loverde of Arlington, Virginia, has acknowledged a lively debate about the direction of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), but asked his priests to take up the annual CCHD collection "without any negative commentary." The nationwide collection for the CCHD-- always timed for the Sunday before Thanksgiving-- will be taken up in parishes this coming weekend. Bishop Loverde's letter to the priests of Arlington suggested that he considered canceling this year's collection in light of the heavy criticism the CCHD has received for funding groups that espouse causes such as abortion and same-sex marriage. "After much research and consultation, I have decided to authorize the collection again this year," he said.
