Cardinals, Lutherans mark 10th anniversary of milestone agreement on justification
November 02, 2009
Catholic leaders, including Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and Cardinal Karl Lehmann of Mainz joined Lutheran and Methodist leaders in commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, a milestone in ecumenical relations between the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation. The World Methodist Council affirmed its agreement with the document in 2006.
“The wording 'consensus in basic truths of the doctrine of justification' aptly describes the present [state]: it is a genuine agreement in basic truths of the doctrine of justification, not a consensus covering all issues,” said Cardinal Lehmann.
