EU bishops' conference hails Irish 'Yes' on Lisbon Treaty

October 05, 2009

The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) has issued a statement praising the "clear and decisive outcome" of an Irish referendum vote to accept the Lisbon Treaty. The COMECE statement-- released by Bishop Adrianus Van Luyn of Rotterdam, the group's president-- looked forward to "the possibility of concluding the ratification process of the Lisbon Treaty by the end of this year."

COMECE attributed the Irish approval of the treaty at least in part to "guarantees" that had been given to protect "the right to life, the protection of amily, and the right of parents to educate their children." The statement did not indicate where these guarantees where to be found. COMECE voiced hopes for an "open, transparent, and regular" dialogue between religious leaders and EU institutions.

COMECE was established to provide a united voice for the bishops' conferences of the countries belonging to the European Union. Insofar as the EU moves closer to becoming a single unified European state, the importance of COMECE will increase.
