Berlusconi meets with Pope: 1st conversation since scandal

September 28, 2009

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi met briefly with Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday morning, September 26. It was their first meeting since the eruption of a political controversy that began with accusations that Berlusconi was flirting with young women, and escalated into an open conflict between the Italian bishops' conference and the allies of the Italian political leader. Berlusconi met with Pope Benedict at Ciampino airport, as the Pontiff was preparing to take off for his weekend visit to the Czech Republic. Father Federico Lombardi, the papal spokesman, told reporters that the meeting was a short one, and it was "not a private meeting."
