Cardinal Zen challenges Beijing: release bishops from jail

Cardinal Joseph Zen has challenged government leaders in Beijing to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China by showing a new commitment to freedom and democracy. Specifically, the cardinal urged the Chinese regime to release the Catholic prelates of the "underground Church" who are still imprisoned, acknowledge the autonomy of the Catholic Church from the Communist Party, and open talks with the Vatican aimed at the restoration of diplomatic ties.
