Pope to visit Great Britain?

September 23, 2009

Plans will soon be unveiled for a visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Great Britain next year, according to reports appearing in the British media. The trip would be an official state visit, including a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, according to the London Times-- unlike the visit by Pope John Paul II in 1982. Media reports indicate that the papal visit will be formally announced by Buckingham Palace "in the next few days." Prime Minister Gordon Brown had invited the Pope to visit during a conversation at the Vatican in February.
