Vatican, Israeli negotiators continue talks on proposed pact
September 21, 2009
Diplomats for the Holy See and Israel met on September 16 and 17 to continue their talks on a long-overdue pact establishing the economic and juridical rights of Catholic institutions in the Holy Land. After pushing for completion of the agreement before the visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Israel in May of this year, the two sides have returned to a more relaxed schedule of monthly talks; their next negotiating session is set for late October. The proposed pact-- which was promised as part of the 1993 agreement that led to the establishment of formal diplomatic relations-- has been under negotiations for more than 15 years.
