Christians may believe in alien life forms, says Vatican Observatory head
September 18, 2009
The director of the Vatican Observatory, in an interview with L'Osservatore Romano, has argued that someone who believes in God might also believe in the existence of extraterrestrial beings; the two positions are not incompatible. Father José Gabriel Funes noted that the Church has never made any formal statement on the question. Father Funes said that as a scientist he withholds judgment on issues on which the evidence is unclear, and "I am always willing to update my ideas in response to the latest research."
