Assumption completes Marian liturgical cycle, Pope notes

August 17, 2009

On Saturday, August 15-- the feast of the Assumption-- Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass at the parish church of St. Thomas of Villanova, near his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo. In his homily remarked that the feast completes a cycle of liturgical celebrations centered around the life of the Virgin Mary: the Immaculate Conception, the Annunciation, the feast of Mary Mother of God and now the Assumption, marking the major steps in her earthly life. With the Assumption Our Lady enters heavenly glory, the Pope said, and Christians can look to her example of fidelity and seek her intercession as they continue the battle on earth, marked by "the tension of the fight between the dragon and the woman, between good and evil."
