Viet head of state will visit Vatican; diplomatic ties to follow?

A Vietnamese government delegation, headed by the country's president, will visit the Vatican in November, Cardinal Pham Minh Man of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) has announced. The announcement has spurred hopes that Vietnam and the Holy See may resume formal diplomatic relations, after several years of informal talks. The meeting may also help to ease rising tensions between government officials and Catholic activists who have been pushing for restoration of church properties confiscated by the Communist regime.
