Cuba’s leading prelate has announced that suspects have confessed to the murders of Spanish missionary priests this year. Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino of San Cristobal de la Habana said in a communiqué that “any attempt to link one case with another or to give it a religious or political meaning [is] completely foreign to the reality of the criminal deed itself.”
Father Isidro Hoyos, a Spanish missionary and friend of the two murdered priests, disagreed. “It seems that the procedure was the same, the torture, the cruelty.”
