Pope asks for 'authentic' democracy in Honduras

During his Angelus audience on July 12, Pope Benedict XVI mentioned his "profound concern" about the political crisis in Honduras. The Holy Father urged the people of that country to move beyond private preferences and serve the common good, saying that only that approach would "ensure peaceful coexistence and authentic democratic life."
The Pontiff's reference to "authentic" democracy seemed to reinforce a statement released by the Honduran bishops, calling attention to the efforts by ousted President Manuel Zelaya to consolidate his own power at the expense of the nation's constituency, and the threats against Honduran democracy by a major Zelaya ally, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez.
