Pope meets G8 first ladies

Pope Benedict XVI met on July 7 with several wives of the world leaders who have gathered in Italy for the G8 meeting. He spoke with the spouses of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, India’s Mammohan Singh, Sweden’s Fredrik Reinfeldt, Mexico’s Felipe Calderon, and South Africa’s Jacob Zuma.

Japan’s Prime Minister Taro Aso, who is a Catholic, had already met with the Pontiff, accompanied by his wife, at a private audience a day earlier. US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle are due to meet the Pope on Friday.

Carlao Bruni, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was not present for the papal audience.
