Defying warnings from the Vatican and German bishops, Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta ordained three priests for the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) near Regensburg, Germany, on June 27. Father Stefan Frey, head of the SSPX seminary in Zaitzkofen, denounced “the verbal bullying we have been receiving in recent days from several German bishops.” Father Galarreta, then 31, was consecrated a bishop in 1988 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, incurring automatic excommunication-- an excommunication lifted by Pope Benedict in January.
