US bishops' conference issues statement of support for Bishop D'Arcy in conflict with Notre Dame

June 22, 2009

The US Catholic bishops have released a statement of firm support for Bishop John D'Arcy of Fort Wayne, Indiana, in his criticism of the University of Notre Dame for inviting President Obama to speak and receive an honorary degree at the school's commencement exercised. After having approved the statement of support during a closed session of their meeting last week, the US bishops released a short statement of "appreciation and support" for Bishop D'Arcy. The statement continued: "We affirm his pastoral concern for Notre Dame University, his solicitude for its Catholic identity, and his loving care for all those the Lord has given him to sanctify, to teach and to shepherd."
