British Cardinal-O’Connor dead at 85

CWN Editor's Note: Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the retired Archbishop of Westminster, died on September 1 at the age of 85 after a long illness.
Ordained as a priest of the Portsmouth diocese in 1956, the future cardinal was named Bishop of Arundel and Brighton in 1977 and Archbishop of Westminster in 2000. He received his red hat from Pope John Paul II that same year, and served at Westminster until his retirement at the age of 76.
With the death of Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor there are now 222 living cardinals, of whom 120 are eligible to vote in a papal conclave.
