Pope to visit Padre Pio's monastery

June 16, 2009

The Vatican has released plans for a papal visit to San Giovanni Rotondo, and the monastery made famous by Padre Pio, on June 21. Pope Benedict will travel by helicopter to the town in Italy's Puglia region. He will pray at the crypt where St. Pio of Pietrelcina is buried, celebrate Mass outside the church of St. Pio, and visit the hospital that Padre Pio founded in 1956 before returning-- again by helicopter-- to the Vatican.
