Bishop Fellay discusses meeting with Cardinal Levada, says Ecclesia Dei restructuring imminent

June 16, 2009

Recounting details of a June 5 meeting with Cardinal William Levada-- whom he described as “very courteous” and “gentle”-- Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), has revealed that Pope Benedict will issue a motu proprio by June 20 directing that the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei become part of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

“According to what we have heard,” said Bishop Fellay, “most probably, one of the monsignors of the congregation will be the executive head of Ecclesia Dei. So it will be very tightly united with the congregation.”

Bishop Fellay warned that negotiations with the Congregation could be jeopardized if Regensburg Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller goes ahead with his announced excommunications of six SSPX priests and deacons. Their ordination is scheduled for June 27.
