Kerala bishops warn against Pentecostal prayer groups
June 09, 2009
The bishops of Kerala-- the southwestern Indian state that has been a Catholic stronghold since its evangelization by St. Thomas the Apostle-- are warning the faithful not to take part in Pentecostal prayer groups that “teach that evil spirits would come to us if we use some kinds of flowers, pictures of elephants or peacock, lamps or ‘mangalsutra’” (a Hindu marriage symbol).
The bishops continue, “They are spreading the message that by using things which other religions which other religions consider sacred, the sins would also come to the user. All this show[s] only their abhorrence for Hindu religion.”
