Orissa Catholics on edge as federal troops announce departure; five Christian homes attacked
June 03, 2009
Catholics in the eastern Indian state of Orissa were on edge after an announcement that federal paramilitary forces would leave the area within a month. “The situation is still very tense, and the withdrawal of federal forces will cause panic among people,” one priest warned. An estimated 90 Christians were killed and 50,000 left homeless in a wave of anti-Christian persecution last year; five more Christian homes were burned on May 31.
