Pope meets Ukrainian President Yushchenko
June 01, 2009
Pope Benedict XVI met on June 1 with President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine. Their short conversation touched on "the international situation," a Vatican statement later reported, as well as discussion of Church-state affairs in Ukraine. Relations among religious groups are delicate in Ukraine, because of tensions over the use of church properties that were confiscated from Ukrainian Catholic parished during the Stalinist era and have not yet been returned. The situation is further complicated by splits within the Orthodox Church, with three different groups contending for the loyalty of the faithful.
