US offers benefits to gay partners of diplomats

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced that the federal government will provide benefits to the homosexual partners of American diplomats living abroad. Spouses of diplomats have long been provided with benefits that include language instruction and emergency travel as well as medical care. In a memorandum to State Department employees, Clinton said that "the department will provide these benefits for both opposite-sex and same-sex partners because it is the right thing to do."
