Egypt: top Islamic cleric visits Coptic Orthodox leader after Cairo church bombing
December 15, 2016
Sheikh Ahmed al Tayyib, the imam of Al Alzhar University, paid a call on Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II on December 14, expressing his sympathy and solidarity after the bombing attack on Cairo’s St. Mark cathedral, in which 26 people were killed.
The Islamic leader observed that the Islamic State, which has claimed responsibility for the cathedral bombing, does not “make any distinction between Christians and Muslims” in the choice of targets. The real aim of the terrorists, he said, is to break “the unity of the Egyptian people.”
