Nicaraguan bishops protest government violence against citizens
December 01, 2016
The Catholic bishops of Nicaragua have raised their voices to denounce violence by the government against private citizens, pointing in particular to police attacks on farmers who had planned to demonstrate in the capital to protest the seizure of their properties.
“This is not normal,” said Msgr. Jorge Solorzano, a spokesman for the bishops’ conference, after many farmers were injured in confrontations with police who squelched their public demonstration. He said that the bishops have pleaded with President Daniel Ortega “not to suppress the people.”
The statement from the episcopal conference was issued as opposition leaders planned another public demonstration in Managua on December 1.
