San Diego bishop tells outspoken priest to use parish bulletin only for calendar events

December 01, 2016

Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego has instructed a pastor to use his parish bulletin only for announcing calendar events, rather than his personal views.

Father Richard Perozich had come under fire for a bulletin in which he told parishioners at Immaculate Conception church that it is gravely sinful to vote for political candidates who support abortion. He has also written against same-sex marriage, illegal immigration, embryo research, and gun control. The pastor’s personal essays made up just one portion of a lengthy parish bulletin that also included short excerpts from Church Fathers and from recent papal documents including both Amoris Laetitia and Familiaris Consortio.

Father Perozich has indicated that he will obey the bishop’s instructions. He has transferred the material from the parish bulletin onto a personal web site.

Hmmm, looking at the list, it would appear that, in the main, the topics are not particularly personal with the possible exception of gun control. And even there, there is enough history of dictators disarming and then... As this is the same bishop that liberally interprets AL so this is no surprise. Kudos to the good Father for sustaining his obedience vow; definitely more than I could do in that situation!!
